Mid-afternoon, today, I was sitting with friends in an Aranda garden when we noticed a mature male Golden Whistler perched atop a bare apricot tree. I suddenly remembered
reading that a sharp report such as the crack of a stockwhip would cause a Golden Whistler to burst into song. Accordingly, I picked up a piece of timber fence paling and whacked against the brick barbie. It produced a satisfyingly loud report, but the stupid
bird sprang skywards and sped away without voicing a single note. L
