There is a juvenile Koel again in my neighbourhood. The male wirrawirra calling
started very early this year in my part of Gungahlin and did not cease. I have
not seen a female Koel but now there is a juvenile. As this is a month earlier
than my 2019 observation of the juvenile and male Koel interactions in my
backyard, my plums and elderberries are not yet ripe and so the wattlebirds are
feeding the squawking juvenile in the ornamental plums which hang over other
people’s back fences. I hear the male all the time but the juvenile does not
yet appear to be independent. I have not yet seen them actually together but
when I hear the juvenile I also hear the male a short distance away. I suspect
that the wattlebirds feeding the juvenile harass the male if it comes close and
so if it eventually comes closer, it may not do so until the juvenile is
independent . Cheers John Harris
