Just then there was a young chough looking lost in the enclosed courtyard at Capital Tower in New Acton. It had an injury to one eye and couldn't fly more than its own height. I'm not sure how it got into the courtyard but it had obviously become separated from its family.

I did a scout of the neighbourhood and fortunately happened to see some choughs moving in the distance. So I went back to the courtyard and after a bit of chasing managed to catch the youngster, wrap it in a towel and it soon calmed down. I then carried it to what I hoped was its family and released it. The whole group gathered around screeching excitedly with eyes, beaks and wings all opened wide. I hope that was a sign of them welcoming the youngster back and not saying 'who are you?' After a minute it toddled off with them so it appears to be OK.

I did consider taking it to the vet to get its eye checked but thought it better to return it to its family rather than cause it more stress.

Also in the excitement I didn't check any of the birds for leg bands.
