Multiple pairs of Great Crested Grebe were on the upper reaches of Cotter Dam this afternoon, presumably attracted to the pickings given the water is brimming at the highest level for years.

I accessed the dam by turning left toward Piccadilly Circus at the T intersection at Uriarra Station; taking the next road left into the pine forest about 1.5 km from the turnoff; driving through the forest for about 1 km or so before turning into the first track to the left available. After 100 metres or so you encounter a yellow gate, “fishing prohibited” sign etc.

The dam is a walk of 1.5 km or so from this gate, with my best sightings of the Grebes from following the every diminishing pathway as it bends south along the side of the lake. I saw other pairs in the distance so access at any point could be prospective.
