Hi Susan,

White winged choughs are extremely inefficient feeders spending a lot of time each day sifting through leaves. So it does take a whole family to feed a chick.

That is why, as a rehabilitator, I find it very easy to release an orphan chough because any chough family will adopt it.  The more birds the easier it is to raise a chick.  Normally they would be stealing fledglings or juveniles from other chough families to add to their family.

I’m finding it very interesting that one of the local nests (sturdy, mud) has one baby chough being fed by 10 adults while a  Crested Pigeon nest (flimsy, sticks)  is attended by one pair of birds which have already had two young ones fledge and leave and the pair has started to incubate again.  Neil Hermes’ book says that they may have up to 6 clutches a year!
