Yes, you and many others. I recall being inspired when he gave a talk at the
BOC monthly meeting in 1970, (I was 13) to introduce his V1 field guide (non
passerines). The style of the field guide he introduced then was a radical
change from what had been before. With many practical ideas like consistent
flying and perched pictures of many groups of birds, such as raptors, waders &
waterbirds and close ups illustration of heads when that was the most useful
thing to show and beak outlines of seabirds. He did some terrific bird
photography too, when this was difficult. Then it was a long wait till 1975
when the V2 FG (for the passerines) came out. For many years those two were the
books we all had and they laid the foundation for all the others that came
later. He continued to innovate as others also added to the choice of available
references.
I have also today received my usual email from Andrew Isles Natural History
Books, called A TRIBUTE TO PETER SLATER. No need for me to copy or repeat what
Andrew has given. More information available there.

It is being reported that Peter Slater has died.
I remember graduating from What Bird is That by Caley to Peter’s 2 volumes in
the 70’s. He had a massive influence on my bird identifying success rate.
Farewell Peter.
