Dry days in the bush can be very quiet. But the little moments still happen.

After wandering around the quiet woodland behind Namadgi Visitors Centre this morning, I walked back past the dam and was stopped by a commotion of small birds. Several were perching in a bush overhanging the dam, then were flying one or two at a time down to the muddy water, dunking themselves, and returning to the shade of the foliage to shake off the drops. Two White-plumed Honeyeaters, one Yellow-faced Honeyeater, one female Leaden Flycatcher and one Sacred Kingfisher did this in turn. The Leaden Flycatcher persisted the longest, with at least half-a dozen dips while I watched. An Eastern Rosella foraging on the muddy bank and a Magpie-lark gathering mud completed the picture.
