Exciting visitors in Lyons, very early this morning (1am). Full moon. Heard an unusual noise in back garden. Saw two ‘owl’ silhouettes on wire. Then saw a larger one on the roof. It flew to the others & they made a call I haven’t heard before. Neither the tawny ‘washing machine’, nor the boobook. Best described as almost growling.
The birds flew off. I went to the front door and out, saw the big one swoop down near the drive. Illuminated by a dim garage light, its wings had brown-ish and much lighter bands. Wide wingspan. Noticed silhouette of others. We have many water bowls of varying depths in the garden & heaps of lizards at the moment.
Also, found these feathers 2 days ago on Lyons oval. Largest is 21cm. From neighbours' chooks or from the visitors?
Grateful for suggestions.
Fiona
