Martin, as noted on this chat line there was one reported to Canberra Nature Map on 15 June from Denman Prospect, very close to where you saw this one.

 

Possibly the same bird.  It was in a playground and noted as being very tame, so probably an escapee.

A friend has just sent me this. 

On our way across to Belconnen this morning, I saw a Major Mitchell on the nature strip as we drove along John Gorton Drive in Molonglo. 
Escapee or is the drought out west causing them to move into the mountains, or maybe it just got caught in a wind gust somewhere west of Wagga over the last few days.
Any thoughts? 

I'd rate the three options about equal probability.
