Thanks to all that sent a reply to me.

Philip, all the sightings were on Sunday but yes, both species could well have been there.

Yes the bird in the photos would be a Common Greenshank. Is the bird in the photos the same individual as the “Last Sunday there was a report on eBird of a Marsh Sandpiper at Jerra Wetlands”. As in could both have been there on different days? I have seen both together at other places that are more suitable for waders. I am not suggesting that is the case. But it is not ruled out either, just on this.

Hi Shorty

IMHO, it is a Common Greenshank because:

  • it is a stocky bird - Marsh Sandpipers are delicate/graceful
  • bill is thick and slightly upturned - MS bill is needle-like
  • there is no eyebrow - MS has eyebrow
  • it has a white face - MS has dark spot in front of eye

Cheers

Sue

Hi All,

Last Sunday there was a report on eBird of a Marsh Sandpiper at Jerra Wetlands. By the time i saw the bird the sun was setting and it was on the other side of the swamp from Cygnus hide so my photos are not real good. After getting home i looked through the pics and posted some on an Bird ID page on facebook ( ABID ) and it was confirmed as a Common Greenshank.

With events that have happened today i would like more opinions of what the bird is.

My list with pics can be found here.  https://ebird.org/australia/view/checklist/S56745013

Another list with much better pics can be found here.  https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S56743662
