Cassowaries are very large and dangerous birds. The current problem in north Queensland is of course related to Cassowaries learning to exploit tourists in picnic areas etc. and acting aggressively in seeking to be fed. My next-door neighbours returned from a very costly trip to north Queensland in their brand new SUV. At a roadside rest  area an aggressive cassowary demanded food. They beat a hasty retreat to their car whereupon the bird repeatedly kicked the side of the car, raking the side with its dangerous claws and gouging it quite deeply. The cassowary, unfortunately, cannot foot the panel beater’s bill.
