For the last several weeks we have been observing increasing numbers of YFHEs
moving through the Bega area. This has been most pronounced at our bush block
at nearby Black Range (250m elevation) where now almost constant streams of
birds (in flocks of say 30 or more) have been moving through the tree canopy.
Movement is in a generally northern direction.
This migration has been concurrent with the movements reported by Canberra COG
observers on the chatline. We saw our first YFHEs here at about the same time
as reports began on the chatline. There seemed to be little delay between the
Canberra observations and ours; one would presume a delay would take place if
the birds were migrating from the ACT mountains to this coastal area. So, where
are our Bega birds coming from - perhaps the Snowies?
Meanwhile, Goshawk and Peregrine activity has increased and it seems reasonable
to assume that these raptors are taking advantage of the honeyeater migration.
Cheers
Matt and Steph
