IMO, one of the reasons for their very rapid spread was that they were attractive as live bait for rec fishers: plenty of wriggling on the hook, tough enough to transport and survive. I imagine that left over bait fish were sometimes released. The irony
is that they are, inter alia, fish egg eaters...
Live bait fishing is now banned, I believe, in NSW and Victoria. I am not sure about regs in other states.
