For the spring/summer 2018 Welcome Swallows were not as common as in the previous 3 years. The prolonged drought appeared to have an impact on their numbers. Sites, such as the Fyshwick Sewage Farm and West Belconnen Pond had only small numbers present (at
least whenever I went there). We now can verify that impression.
Over the period from End of January to April numbers were highest between 2016/2018 at the Norgrove Park/Kingston Harbour roost site.
A count, I carried out this morning gave only a total of 420 Welcome Swallows. While this may seem a large number in absolute terms, it represents only 25 to 30% of the numbers at this time of year in 2016-2018 (see Canberra Bird Notes 43 (3): 236-251).
