No, no. Going in quite the wrong direction. The 'whisperer' metaphor
(associated with Robert Redford in that well-known movie) originally related to
horses, where it had the meaning 'a horse trainer who adopts a sympathetic view
of the motives, needs and desires of the horse, based on modern equine
psychology' . That doesn't sound like Shorty at all. He is more like Indiana
Jones, being of an adventurous roving disposition, searching out unusual things
near at hand and in out of the way places.
