Thanks to all who responded to my questions about Koels. Having said that I hadn’t noticed any Wirra-wirras for a while, I just went for a windy walk along Ginninderra Creek and saw two males and heard a third in the distance. I think all the suggestions are correct – less frenzied mating activity now, birds busy feeding on soft fruits etc now to build up strength for the flight, some may have gone north already etc. I find interesting the unresolved question of when the fledglings can actually start the long journey north, even with rest stops. And also the perennial question of how they know where to go anyway but maybe we should not open that up……
