Thank you Chris, of great interest to those of us interested in the title ‘Canberra’s most common duck’ (maybe ‘ Canberra and vicinity will be more accurate’). For that, I think the reporting rate is the better guide. See below.
The graphs are of different sizes because the vertical scale is different. We can see the AWD had a golden period about1997-2012, but the PBD again edged ahead in more recent years. It was with some excitement I found that in 2017 the
AWD had gained the ascendancy (3352 to 3208) having reversed the deficit of the previous year. I, and I would expect the ducks themselves, are very keen to see the numbers to be announced for 2018.
Of course, we all know ‘Canberra’s Most Common Golfing Duck’ …

Subject: [canberrabirds] Distribution AWD v PBD
Hi, I have for many years been responsible for the waterfowl section of the ABR. For those interested in trivia I have always stated that the Australian Wood Duck has the largest distribution (number of grid cell) of waterfowl. This year
the story still holds but only just – Australian Wood Duck 134 cells c.f. Pacific Black Duck 128 cells.
