Yes, a curious error Sz. The piece may be the work of different hands. The ‘Cattle egrets at Jerrabomberra’ might puzzle the SMH readership, particularly if they discern the national parliament in the background. That photo from about
4 years ago was part of a ‘ lining up’ project, 2 further examples, of several, attached below. The point was the proximity of the parliament to the grazing cattle, with attendants. The hot air metaphor was not intended. Note ‘built fence’ in foreground,
the symbol of the Australian countryside, this one lacking the plain wire strand to allow the dogs through. You wouldn’t wan t your hot air balloon to come down on that.

Geoff,
Congrats re gt illustrations to the C.T. Sat, 12/1 article re cattle egrets this morn but oh dear! The article accompanying, by author Candida Baker, got the poem’s author’s name seriously wrong: Judith Wright;
Not White. Maybe just a typo.

And thanks to David and Roger for drawing attention to the FENCE-SITTING BIRDS OF YASS SHIRE. Below is what I noticed this morning, including a CF and a chap with improbably long hind-claws. Whatever did they do before
barbed wire?
