That's my bird!
Was released a few days ago. Love the way they are a statue with their beak pointing up but eyes can see everywhere.

Probably Shorty.  Good clear photo.  I have mentioned difficulties with plumage illustrations (ABG and HANZAB).  This bird lacks the plain secondary coverts of adult female.  However it lacks the fine streaking on throat and upper breast shown in HANZAB for juv and instead has slightly darker broad longitudinal stripes I’ve seen on adult fem ale.  Curiously the HANZAB illustration does not show those for female minutus, but does show them on female sinensis.

I jumped the gun, it is a young bird. Maybe the one from the airport?

Hi all,

I got to see the Bittern this morning with thanks to Alan (last name?) coming up to Cygnas Hide to alert us. On the way back to Bittern Hide Alan commented that the Bittern was coming out to the edge of the reeds, grabing some unknown prey and returning into the reeds with the prey and returning back out to the edge shortly after to get more prey. We also noted this several times while watching it.

Possable nest or young inside the reeds?
