The Morcombe app for iPad is about half the price as the one for Pizzey, at least it was when I purchased them. I find the Morcombe one easier to use. The apps are really good, as they provide bird calls, comparisons side-by-side, smart searches, and you set your location so extraneous birds are not shown. My 2 cents worth.

I wish to buy a relative an up to date bird field guide. There are many new ones on the market.
In the past I have favoured Pizzey and Knight followed by Slatter. 
How are you all finding the newer ones
