I had my own local version of a pilot bird last week.  Three Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos flew over my house escorted by an Eastern Rosella.  The rosella flew at or near the front of the procession all the time I watched, looking all the world like a pilot leading the bigger birds to a berth.
