Melbourne has been announced as the host city for the 28th International Ornithological Congress in 2022.

Considered the oldest and most prestigious of meetings for bird scientists, the Congress has occurred every four years since 1884.

Approximately 1,500 delegates will flock to Melbourne to attend the 7-day event to be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), injecting $13.6 million into the Victorian economy.

The Congress aims to bring together amateur birders and the scientists who study birds. It was last held in Australia in Canberra in 1974 and bird watching excursions to regional Victoria and around Australia will form an important part of the program.
