As the Bird Coordinator for Wildcare Queanbeyan, I get regular calls about White faced herons hanging around the kangaroo carcasses.  I assume they are eating the bugs hanging around the carcasses.

I’ve seen this once myself some years ago by the Federal Highway.  I assumed the bird was eating maggots!

HANZAB notes only one confirmed case of this species eating carrion.  Other possible cases are thought to have been eating flies on the corpse.  So yes, unusual.

This afternoon about 4km south of Queanbeyan a White-faced Heron feeding/pecking on a kangaroo carcass (more than 2 weeks old). Unusual behaviour??
