The Rankins Springs area (100 kms west of West Wyalong) provides great inland birding opportunities: Budgies, Major Mitchell's Cockatoos, Glossy Black-Cockatoos, Black Honeyeaters, Pied Honeyeaters,
Painted Honeyeaters, Turquoise Parrots, Crested Bellbirds and... perhaps if you're extremely lucky... a Malleefowl.... just to name a few.
The local community environment group, the Lachlan Fold Wildlife Action Group (LFWAG), now runs the ‘Rankins Springs Birding Weekend’. It will be a fun birding
exploration of the local area. No formal bird surveys are planned.
The exact details of the weekend has yet to be finalised, but the usual scenario is:
- Friday evening: a ‘meet & greet dinner’ (BBQ at the hall or Pub Dinner),
- Saturday: an early morning to mid-afternoon bus trip to local birding hot spots (morning & afternoon teas, lunch & snacks provided ),
- Saturday Evening” usually a casual affair - with a BBQ gathering at the Rankins Springs Memorial Hall,
- Sunday Morning: a local birding bus trip.
Last years cost's were: Saturday - all events (bus birding trip, morning/afternoon teas, lunch & evening BBQ - $70 pp). Sunday (birding bus trip - $20 pp)
NB. Exact format, bus trip locations, times & costs will be advised closer to the weekend.
Accommodation choices at Rankins Springs include the local caravan park, motel & surrounding B&B’s.
