At 10:30 this morning I watched from the kitchen window as a female Common Blackbird gathered dry grass and took it into a nearby evergreen shrub while the male perched on a fence sunning and supervising. So it would appear that Brer Blackbird has his priorities properly sorted. Anyhow, I remember reading somewhere that Canberra blackbirds may keep nest building until frequent hard frosts set in. Nonetheless, I’ve never recorded them building later than the last week in March during over 30 years of watching blackbirds in Holt.
