Congratulations. That is a more difficult one than most. Looking at the photo on full screen, certainly suggests a soft and fluffy texture. If that is correct, and I think I am, (one can best tell by feeling it), that makes it an owl. The white spots on a dark background and the size strongly suggest to me a Southern Boobook, wing covert feather. It is certainly the most likely local owl with that pattern.

 

If it is not soft and fluffy, then that opens up other possibilities, but I doubt it.
