Hi,

Under the supervision of Dr Birgita Hansen from the Federation University of Australia, Ballarat, the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust has again just complete a most successful weekend of trapping Latham’s Snipe at Jerrabomberra Wetlands.  Eleven birds were trapped over the two days and this now adds to the seven caught in December. In addition to a metal band, all birds carry an orange coloured leg flag on the right leg.  Some of the birds carry a geo-locator on the left leg.

The orange leg flag are carried above the right ‘knee’ with the following numbers:

December 2017 catch- P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, P7

January 2018 catch: P0, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99

In addition there were four birds flagged in January 2017: R1, R2, P8, P9 of which R2 has been seen recently.

We expect the birds to hang around the Wetlands until their departure to the breeding grounds towards the end of February. The leg flags may well be visible from any of the hides at the Wetlands. If anyone observes a bird with a flag and possibly a geo-locator could they report their observations as soon as possible to Lori Gould- see email above.

Chris
