White-throated Needletail (Hirundapus caudacutus) Report for 2016/17 Season.

 Well October is nearly here and many in the north will make their first observations of Needletails during this month.  The first sightings have already been sent in.

 This season saw the birds clumping more than last year.  I determine this by fewer observers seeing them, and many observers seeing less flocks than last year.  Whereas the lucky few saw more flocks than last year.

 This year there were 2464 reports sent in or published where I could find them. This is 587 less than last year.  Does this constitute further evidence for their decline? On the other hand, 73 observers reported more flocks last season than the previous one.  However, 146 observers who reported both seasons saw less flocks than the previous season. I know that some regular reporters did not see any flocks last season. Those who saw more flocks averaged 4 flocks more, while those who saw less average 6 flocks less.  Clumping into larger flocks could help explain these observations.  Possibly the largest flock reported was seen on the Pacific Hwy, near the Nerong Waterhole in the NSW Central Coast, 4 Jan 2017. Michael Atzeni drove through the flock for several kilometres but unfortunately did not have time to stop and do a larger sample and so make a more accurate estimation.  He was sure there were thousands.  Ian McAllan saw 2,000 at Darkum Headland (NSW North Coast) 2.5 weeks previously. The next-largest flock was 1,500 birds seen by Peter & Bev Morgan 4 days before Ian’s and a little further north again at Brooms Head.  Mark Ley, Stephen Clark, Greg Clancy and Kayleen Connolly all saw flocks of 1,000.  All these flocks were in Nth NSW.

 There are five reports that could be of overwintering birds.  Three were in NSW, 1 in ACT and 1 in Qld – all during June – August. These flocks were of 20,3,2,10 birds & one of unspecified size.

 The first report I have for the season was from Qld, seen by Ian Bunce 1^st Sept.  The second flock was seen on 4^th Sept in Victoria by Arthur Spurgeon. Neither of these observers counted the birds! The first flock seen in NSW was of 3 birds seen at Durakai S.F. 25^th Sept by Russell YONG, M. BARNES, et al. The first flock seen in ACT was of 2 birds seen at Cook on 5^th Dec by Nicki TAWS.  The first reported flock from Tasmania was of 200 birds seen at Bay of Fires Coastal Strip on 11^th Jan by Saul DIXON. The first South Australian flock was of 4 birds at Millicent, seen on 6^th Feb by Sheila BOYLE.

 There were 0 (0 previous season) reports from the NT this season.   There were 6 records from WA (1 last year), 12 (13) records from SA, 35 (42) from ACT, 25 (40) from TAS, 739 (843) from Qld, 380 (485) from Vic, & 1301 (1590) from NSW.

 The average flock size this season was 33. Even if we guestimate that there were 5,000 birds at the Nerong Waterhole – the average rises only to 35. This compares with 30 & 42 for the two previous years.  Each of these figures are significantly lower than the mean of 52 for the decade 2000-2010.

 OK so who reported the most Needletail sightings this season?  If you live in a city most of your sightings are going to come while driving, away from home.  If you live in the forest, you will see them more often around home.  If you live in the forest and deliberately go outside throughout the day to look for Needletails, then you will see lots more.  That’s where Irene lives and that is what she does.  So once again the top recorder for the season was Irene ALLAN, making 111 sightings, a few less than she did last year.  Irene has made an important contribution to understanding the bird’s behaviour and numbers.  If you reported just one sighting however, that is also an important contribution. So please keep them coming.
