There have been several reports of Superb Parrots in the general North West
trees of Mt Rogers Reserve this last week.
I saw at least one pair fly to unseen but begging young this morning about
10am. But other reported sightings have been from 06.30am.
The adults were feeding on or from Acacia pods showing the importance of
Wattles to this species at this time of the year.
The general area is around Wickens Close, Fraser but there’s no guarantee how
much longer the ‘Superbs’ will be creching young there.
We have not heard or seen Superb Parrots around unharvested fruit in mid-Flynn
this season. There are several Loquat trees that they visited in past years
until perhaps 2015’s summer.
Whether it’s a coincidence or a threatening process Rainbow Lorikeets are
common in this same mid-Flynn area now. They feast on eucalypt blossoms and,
last week, Loquat fruit.
Will the overly aggressive Lorikeets alter the dynamics of Superb parrots’
territories and/or foraging habits?
There was a Scaly-Breasted Lorikeet in a neighbour’s backyard yesterday
afternoon at about 16.00hrs.
It was last seen in the grass under a flowering Feijoa tree.
I assume it was an escapee as it was unfazed by the noise of three children 2,
7 and 10 years and three adults.
