There has recently been discussion in the English Names Committee about the current curious use of ‘boobook’ and ‘morepork’ following on the revised taxonomy.  ‘Morepork’ (the NZ name) now seems appropriate for the hybrid Ninox sp on Norfolk.  However some (eg Australian Bird Guide)  regard the Tasmanian Ninox as a subspecies of the NZ  Ninox so …. ‘Morepork’??   Apparently those birds disperse seasonally to Victoria, which will have both Boobooks and Moreporks    To complicate matters, others (HBW/BLI, WLAB) regard the Tasmanian birds as a separate species, for which ‘Tasmanian Boobook’ is favoured.  So in Tasmania you will hear either ‘boobook’ or ‘morepork’ depending on which list you follow.
