I suggest if it
sounded almost exactly like a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo then it probably is. Barn Owls have a raspy screech but not that loud and Barking Owls scream (the strangled woman
call) as well as the barking sound, but Barking Owls are unlikely. It could be lots of reasons but a simple guess is it is just one or more likely a group of roosting Cockatoos, each being disturbed by a possum climbing around the tree.

Subject: [canberrabirds] Screeching Nocturnal Animal?
Hi All - Last night I awoke to the sounds of very loud, constant screeching sounds that sounded almost exactly like a Sulpher-Crested Cockatoo. However, this was at 3:00 am in the morning and continued well until dawn. Sometimes the screeches
were constant with no break for 10-15 seconds and then there would be a slight pause for perhaps 3-5 seconds and they would start again. I believe I heard it calling the previous night also. The animal is quite far away but the sound fills the whole street.
I live in Bruce a couple of streets back from the AIS and Stadium. I have checked all the owl calls and the Tawny Frogmouth in the Morcombe App but the closest thing it really sounds like is the White Cockatoo. I've never heard anything
like this at night before. Can anyone provide some insight as to what it might be? If it is a cockatoo why is it calling all night long?
