Thank you to all COGites who gave me advice on birding in Bali. We did book Hery Kusumanegara to guide us on a 2 day birding trip in Barat NP and Bedugul Botanical Gardens. I saw over 40 new birds but more importantly the Bali Starling, the Black-winged Myna and stunning birds I would never have seen on my own and which I am in no way familiar a Pitta woodpeckers, barbets, pidgeons, fruit doves, a hornbill and kingfishers, some Bali animals etc. I was struggling with the heat. Hery and Jay the driver still managed give us a good tour helping us with places to rest, stay, eat and ATMs. If you wish to engage Hery it is advisable to book before you go. Certainly value for money for us.
We also looked at some cultural things temples fire dancing rice cropping etc. For the most part in the north English was not spoken except sometimes by hotel staff and we cann't speak Indonesian but we managed. All very interesting and some good places to stay.
Eventually my inability with the heat slowed me down. We found the Balaneese very easy to be amongst.
The best bird book I had was A field guide to the birds of Borneo Sumatra, Java and Bali by John MacKinnon and Karen Phillips 1993. I got it through Amazon and strangely it got sent from Switzland
