I agree with Con and Geoffrey that Topknot Pigeon is a better ID for Shorty's flock.

Ebird has a few more records of Channel-billed Cuckoo in NSW for June-July (mostly around the Port Macquarie latitudes) but as far as I could tell all were single birds and the reports are spread over several years.  The biggest flock ever reported to eBird in NSW was 30 birds at Moree on February 28 2016.  The observer noted "Highly abundant with many juveniles, all flushed from fig trees"

Shorty  -  How interesting, thank you.   I agree with Con. Can’t find a profile pic of a Topknot Pigeon in flight but the head profile looks much more like the pigeon as does the general shape.  The second BA atlas has a single record of a straggler CBC in NSW at this time of year, so a flock of 38 would be very unusual.  [By the way, it’s not all that cold here, quite warm, in fact]  g

Thanks, Con.

After zooming in 800% on my pics you could well be right. I guess i will just leave it as possible. My Dad ( Local ) thinks it is cold here at the moment but shorts and t-shirt is all i need, just need the rain to go away.

Hi Shorty

My best guess would be Topknot Pigeon. They are a flock bird. Location and Geography are right - I have seen them at or over the sea at times and you are likely to see them in numbers in northern NSW. The birds in the image sort of generally look like pigeons. I reckon you can just sort of make out the little flattish bump on the back of the head that these birds show in flight.  BTW, I hope your nights are warmer up your way than they are down here.

regards

Con

G'day all,

I am up at Port Macquarie at the moment and saw a flock of 38 birds flying North just out to sea. I believe they are Channel-billed Cuckoo. Very poor pic, long distance and into the sun ( through cloud ). They are a little longer than an A Raven and shape looks good to me and zooming in more on my pc makes me feel correct. Can anyone confirm from this lousy pic?
