My best guess would be Topknot Pigeon. They are a flock bird. Location and Geography are right - I have seen them at or over the sea at times and you are likely to see them in numbers in northern NSW. The birds in the image sort of generally look like pigeons.
I reckon you can just sort of make out the little flattish bump on the back of the head that these birds show in flight. BTW, I hope your nights are warmer up your way than they are down here.

I am up at Port Macquarie at the moment and saw a flock of 38 birds flying North just out to sea. I believe they are Channel-billed Cuckoo. Very poor pic, long distance and into the sun ( through cloud ). They are a little longer than an A Raven and shape
looks good to me and zooming in more on my pc makes me feel correct. Can anyone confirm from this lousy pic?
