Anyone keen to search for Swift Parrots in the ACT or South West Slopes this month?
The May 2017 Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater survey round is coming up soon on
May 20th & 21st and I have offered to help coordinate volunteers for the ACT and South West Slopes this year.
As always, if you cannot do a survey on the weekend, we are happy for people to get out a week either side
of this weekend, and as usual incidental sightings are also welcomed. These surveys have been occurring for many years now and this is a continuation of an important long-term
process to monitor these very rare birds.
We have a nice suite of sites to be surveyed so if you are interested please get in touch with me at
and I can send out the relevant forms and/or directions to sites. If you have some favourite sites to visit please let me know so I can allocate them to you and avoid duplication, or
otherwise I would be happy to suggest some sites for you to check out.
We generally ask volunteers to survey an area for approx 20 minutes (walking slowly along a walking track or through a park and observing birds). Any spot is fine for carrying out the
survey (e.g. National Parks, conservation reserves, private property), but both species do prefer areas which contain flowering eucalypts for foraging or areas of heavy lerp.
