I surveyed the two ponds in McKellar this morning (Sunday 19th) between 10:25 and 11:10. Despite there being some excellent snipe habitat, with plenty of exposed mud next to good loafing sites,  NO snipe were recorded. Overall the ponds were pretty quiet and slowly drying out, with 12 species being recorded on the “Small” pond, including 2 Spotted (Turtle) Doves that flew through and landed on a nearby house roof, and 14 species on the “Large” pond where there was nothing of note. At both sites it tried very hard to rain . There are some huge carp in the “Small” pond. There is also a large amount of rubbish in and around both ponds that needs to be cleaned up – a good job for people on Community Service orders!!
