Hi All,

Update on the Snipe project.

Nozomi still appears to be at Jerra – see attached. We are keeping an eye on this as she should be heading off soon. Numbers of Snipe are dwindling at Jerra.

Tsubasa went off the radar for 2 weeks (last recorded at Gwydir Wetlands), came back on a week ago and off again at present. We have asked CSIRO researchers working on the “Ibis tracking project” in the Gwydir to go and have a look around in the area of the last reading. We are hoping to find a tracker with no bird attached but it is a needle in a haystack. Interestingly Tsubasa followed the same flyway as the Ibis. See attached ‘Tsubasa and Friends’ – she is the red line in the photo. If you want a higher res photo let me know and I can send it.

This weekend is the last ACT Snipe survey – thank you for all your efforts. We will be collating the data and combining all the information from the surveys, the leg flag data, the satellite tracking and incidental sightings to put together a report about the project to date. We have learnt a huge amount from all these efforts in terms of Snipe movement, habitat use and site loyalty that we didn’t previously know. Birgita Hansen will be coming to Canberra in July for a Q & A (open to everyone) and to discuss the future plans for the project. It will be interesting to see if our flagged birds return next season, and we have two more trackers to deploy. We may also undertake further surveys but perhaps to align with the Australian Snipe surveys on 3 dates (rather than every month given the commitment required). Watch this space!

In the mean-time (probably late April), I will be organizing a get together to say thank you for all your amazing support and efforts so far. This project couldn’t be done without your help. All welcome! Date and time to be announced (in consultation with COG).

Thanks again,

Lori
