One of my lifetime birding memories is from some years ago, sitting at the top of a dune on the beach at Mimosa Rocks, just North of Tathra, watching many Christmas beetles rising out of
the Bitou Bush. As they were 1 -2m above the vegetation White-throated Needletails swooped in at full speed and took them. The noise of their flight was most impressive - as of course was the precision flying.
I can't remember how many swifts were involved but it was quite a lot.

This morning at the Jerra wetlands I watched a magpie feasting on the Christmas beetles. Swooping down, taking them off leaves as it flew by, perching briefly to get the beetles in right position, then swallowing them whole! |
