Well, I have been underwhelmed by response to my quiz.

Here are the answers:
  • Diver = Musk Duck
  • Carr Goose = Great Crested Grebe!
  • Canvasback = Freckled Duck.  Astonishingly, this one is not in the most excellent book by Ian Fraser and Jeannie Gray.  But neither does a Google search deliver anything helpful.  The name is officially applied to a species of North American waterfowl which really doesn't look anything like the Freckled Duck.  I suspect the derivation of the name is related to warming drinks (such as Bundy OP).
  • Allied Harrier = both Swamp and Spotted Harrier

I have been doing some list matching and come up with some interesting bird names.  I am interested how many people can put the name used in the current official COG List to these vernacular names found in one of my lists - without using Google!
  • Diver
  • Carr Goose
  • Canvasback
  • Allied Harrier
Please reply off-line.
