Was correctly answered by several members as birdcage ( 8 letters ).

First off the mark was Steve Read at 2204 followed very closely by Gwenyth Bray 
2208 .

The question had an avian connection with flappers being birds and not female 
dancers performing the Charleston in the prohibition period ( USA ) as 
suggested by someone who will remain nameless.
