My highest number of snipes seen at one place in our region was recorded on 6 Sep 1997 with on-and-off rain (albeit much lighter than this morning) and with only light wind. I was walking across wet paddocks on the southern end of Lake George and over a couple of minutes snipes "fell"  out of the sky: 64 in total, they stayed for a short time and then took off again.
