Hi,
As a follow-up to yesterday’s email from Sue Lashko concerning the Latham’s Snipe survey – a bit more information…
It should be remembered that their preferred habitat is muddy edges to wetlands or boggy grasslands. As the birds do not readily show themselves it may be necessary to flush the birds. For a thorough search of a wetland this could require
gum boots rather than a casual search from the shoreline.
Many wetlands may be suitable for Snipe only under certain conditions. At present there is much water about and many wetlands could be so full that there is no suitable habitat for the birds to feed. When recording the observations on your
chosen wetland could you please indicate whether there is any suitable Snipe available at the time of the survey.
For either day of the weekend walk slowly around your wetland and record the number of Latham Snipe you see or hear. The number seen, the date and the start and end time of the survey can be submitted through any of the following:
Remember, a record needs to be submitted even though you may not have seen any Snipe.
Thank you for all your efforts – it is very much appreciated.
Cheers Lori
