Chris, all pigeons bred by pigeon fanciers to be put into agricultural shows, or raced, have to be rung as chicks. The leg bands were all silver in my younger days, although I think in more recent years they branched out into coloured metal ones. My dad bred
both show pigeons (including homing pigeons) as well as racing birds. From memory the band used to indicate year of hatching
