David --

Woah. Huge news today, 400 scientists have signed a statement calling on the Baird Government to scrap plans to increase land clearing. I can feel the tide turning in favour of nature.

There’s a long road ahead of us but there’s three reasons I know we’re winning this vital campaign to protect the laws which save wildlife habitat.

1.    You.

A staggering 5,465 people across NSW made a submission opposing the Baird Government’s outrageous plans. That’s huge and shows the Government that we’re a strong community committed to protecting nature.

With the submission period now over, it’s time to take our message directly to the Premier. The Government wants to pass these new laws in October meaning we’ve got three months to change their mind!

Keen to do more now? Drop Premier Baird’s office a quick call on 8574 5000 and ask for his plans to increase land clearing to be scrapped, you can find some useful background information here

 2.    Scientists are on our side.

400 leading scientists oppose the changes and are getting more and more active everyday. The joint statement released today says “between 1998 and 2005 an estimated 100 million native birds, reptiles and mammals were killed because of destruction of their habitat in NSW”. We simply can’t afford to allow an increase in land clearing. Share their powerful message on Facebook and Twitter.

You can read more about their statement in today’s Sydney Morning Herald and ABC. Like what they’re saying? You can write a short letter to the editor of the SMH at: m("smh.com.au","letters");">

3.    Farmers don’t want the changes.

Did you see farmer Glenn Morris ride over the Sydney Harbour Bridge on his horse Hombre? Glenn was so concerned about plans to increase land clearing and degrade healthy soils he took action into his own hands to raise awareness about the future of farming. Check it out here if you missed it.

Glenn isn’t alone, we’ve been getting calls from farmers across the state worried that an increase in land clearing will be bad for farming and lead to soil erosion. Even the peak body for farmers came out opposing the changes.

We’ve really got to ask, who exactly is Mike Baird making these changes for? Not scientists, not family farmers, not wildlife. Who?

It’s up to all of us to Stand Up for Nature and make sure Premier Baird knows we wont let his devastating laws take effect. I know we can win this.

We couldn’t do it without you,

Thank you,

Kate Smolski
