Considering what chases them in the air, there is a compelling evolutionary driver taking out the slowest pigeon genes in any given flock.

Hi Wayne,

According to a list of the world's fastest animals, the Rock Dove is believed to be the sixth fastest. They have apparently been recorded at close to 150 kmh.

This afternoon as I drove along the Cotter Road heading east towards the Tuggeranong Parkway overpass I was overtaken by a small flock of Feral Pigeons heading (as it turned out) back to their roost under the overpass.  So what you might say!

Well, I was doing 80 kph and the birds left me for dead – I estimate they were doing 120 kph!  Admittedly there was a strong westerly blowing them along but even so this was pretty impressive.  They finished off their high speed run with a beautiful banked turn to take them under the bridge in one easy manoeuvre.
