Well surely a Barn Owl is likely. Not common but they are here. I have seen two in the last few years The one at Tuggeranong on the median strip of Athllon drive almost exactly 3 years ago and one on the way home from  COG meeting a couple years ago. .Sooty Owl would be very strange as they are a forest species, then again so is the Powerful Owl.......... Their normal calls are quite different. Have you tried listening to recordings on the internet. They are no doubt there. Try Xeno Canto.......

Hi

For the last few nights I have heard a screech in the dark, including being woken with a start. Have not had any luck with hearing it without background noise or even spotlighting or recording. Have narrowed it down to a Barn owl or maybe Sooty.

Any thoughts on what is more likely? Or what else I should pay attention to?

I am in north Ainslie. We do get the odd Boobook, and I had a Barking Owl not too long ago.
