A good question and nice to be proactive. Well if the dense stretch of Eucalypt street trees near my home is near enough to your home to include in COG’s GBS then participating in the GBS is clearly the easiest existing protocol to retain the records in COG’s system.

Hi all,

There's a dense stretch of Eucalypt street trees near my home that are used by many birds particularly parrots. It's on Aspinall St Watson. The trees border land that is zoned for housing and when development eventually starts, I am concerned the trees will be cut down or thinned dramatically. (No idea of the timeline here. It could be years away.)

The trees are used by Gang-gang Cockatoos regularly, if not daily, and also frequented by Superb Parrots. This morning there were 10 SPs and I logged the data on ebird. Of course many other birds such as King Parrots and usual suspects use the area.

I am trying to figure out how to proceed, to give the trees the best chance of survival. (Ideally they'd form a reserve/park rather than a footpath.)  Apart from logging Gang-gang sightings during the survey period (and I did log many in that area), I am not a big reporter of sightings. I only signed up to ebird today! Do you think  a monthly survey would be enough to establish the pattern? Should I encourage people close by to log sightings too? The SPs spend a lot of time in those trees. There were immatures/young in December, but I did not log this info. The SPs also like some Eucs that are in one of the close by television stations.

Thanks so much,

Megan Mears
