Thanks to those who responded. General consensus was a juvenile Brush Cuckoo.
We debated which of the two (pallid or brush) it could be, but now have the correct answer.

Many thanks
Julie

I forgot to write this bird is mostly speckled brown, quite different from the mostly untidy blackish, whitish & grey of a juvenile Pallid Cuckoo.

Hi Philip,

I must admit Brush was my immediate Id while we were at Mulligan's, but it was actually quite light underneath and on the throat when viewing photos, so I thought maybe pallid, but I've never actually seen a young pallid before.

Thanks for the information and response.

Cheers

I say it is a juvenile Brush Cuckoo. The juvenile Pallid Cuckoo is mainly blackish, whitish & grey. They have a basic colour scheme like if you imagine a very speckled Cockatiel. That it is so speckled on the back (and wing coverts & secondaries doesn’t fit a juvenile Fantailed Cuckoo.

Hi All,

Jill and I saw this cuckoo at Mulligan's Flat today, seemingly in the company of a pair of leaden flycatchers. Our view was obscured and then also from quite a distance.

Our best attempt at an ID is a juvenile pallid cuckoo, but advice from others would be appreciated.

Cheers

Julie
