The small neighbourhood park of Rocky Knob has long been free of Noisy Miners except for a small number of transients that would sometimes appear for a few days in winter. Last Autumn a group of 4 or 5 arrived and has remained since, becoming
more aggressive and intrusive. They are probably from Callum Brae where numbers have increased over recent years. Now they are nest-building. The nest is 15m from the magpies’ in the next yellowbox and 20m from the SCC hollow on the other side where the
owners of that were copulating merrily yesterday. There is some antagonism between magpies and miners and it seems possible that one group or other will give way before the season is over. Curiously the NM nest which is otherwise inconspicuous has a festooning
of Kleenex tissue which makes it easy to pick out. Surprising they would go for the dominant manufacturer. I’d have thought they might choose a miner brand.
