I had two unusual bird sightings today, both of them unexpected.I walked out to get in my car and saw a flock of about 40 Sulphur Crested Cockatoos take flight. Nothing unusual about that, except that birds all around were making alarm calls. Then I saw a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles high in the sky. I don't recall seeing them before around Mawson, only near Namadgi and Tidbinbilla.

The second was at Mugga Lane tip, just as I was driving out. Behind the recycling centre and near the exit road is a small pond which I'd never noticed, but this time out in the open near the road was a Buff-banded Rail. Sadly, I didn't have my camera with me, or I could have got some brilliant shots of it.

The new screen / hide at Kellys Swamp is open for use. Some shrub planting will be done around it by the Friends of JW at their next work party on 20th June. Will also mow the grass between hide and water as per other hides.
